We described a prison's in-use places as its certification

The edition of 11 August 2026 carried, as a short, the sentence "Leeds prison is holding 1,076 people in space certified for 641 — 168% full."

The figures are right and the division is the one our method prescribes: 1,076 people, divided by the 641 places of in-use certified normal accommodation in the July 2026 bulletin, is 167.9%, quoted as 168%. What is wrong is the description of the 641. The Ministry of Justice certifies accommodation at Leeds for 655 people (its baseline CNA in the same bulletin); 641 is the in-use figure — certified places less those out of use that month. "Space certified for 641" asserts a certification the publisher does not publish.

The error was in the sentence template every prison claim is composed from, so it also appeared in unpublished observation files; the 11 August edition is the only surface that carried it to readers. It was caught on 8 September 2026 by the blind verification step, which amended the same wording on a claim about Durham prison — where the gap between the two figures (561 in use against 602 certified) is too large to pass unremarked.

The template now reads "holding 1,076 people in the 641 certified places in use", which describes the denominator as what it is. The 11 August edition's archived page and email are the record of what we published and stay as sent; this entry is the correction.
